The architecture of the irrigation system in the Huerta de València

In 2109, the irrigation of the orchard of Valencia was declared by the FAO, “World Important Agricultural Heritage system” (GIAHS), as a system that sustainably provides multiple goods and services, food and secure livelihoods for thousands of small farmers.

This tour, which runs through the municipalities of Manises and Quart de Poblet, allows you to get to know in depth some of the hydraulic infrastructures, unique in the world as a whole, that make irrigation possible in the Huerta de València: the dams of the Mestalla ditches and Mislata, the new dam of the repartiment and the new bed of the Turia river, a splitter of Muslim origin or the aqueduct dels arquets. In addition, with the visit to the orchard in production and its ditches, it will allow us to understand how the ancient institution that regulates the system works, the Tribunal de las Aguas, intangible heritage of humanity.
